Patriotic Spirit

By Suzi | November 2, 2008

Not only is Halloween a time of year to nibble on different types of goodies…try tasting cookies enjoyed by our U.S. Presidents.

I came across an article in the Lowcountry’s Post and Courier written by Lisa Gutierrez the other day about various presidential cookie recipes including “The White House Cook Book of 1887″ and personal recipes from presidents and first ladies.

“Cookies and the occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue go way back.  All the way to 1801, when the first occupants of the newly built president’s palace, John and Abigail Adams, introduced the mansion to the public at a New year’s Day reception, serving cakes and tarts - and cookies.  The lowly cookie, in fact, is very much a staple at the White House.”

The Family Circle magazine keeps track of predicting the top recipe for White House cookies based on whose wife has the most popular ingredients.  Pick up the magazine this month to see who is the patriotic cookie winner!

Enjoy - and go vote!

Recession Is Here

By Suzi | October 20, 2008

According to the National Association of Home Builders, a recent monthly survey showed that sentiment among builders hit a record low in early October.

It is harder for home builders to get loans to pursue new houses and more difficult to sell those they do build.  They get hit with a double whammy so to speak.

I think the recession actually started at the end of last year, and because of the financial panic we are going through right now, it’s likely to last another year.

Film company to shoot on the Isle of Palms

By Suzi | October 7, 2008

The Sea Cabins Pier on the Isle of Palms will be the setting of at least a few scenes in a major motion picture.  Sea Cabins Condominiums owns the pier just west of the Isle of Palms county park and has already granted permission to use it.  Hopefully the movie crew will generate some much needed activity on front beach during the off season.  This would be the second Sparks novel made in the Lowcountry.  “The Notebook” was shot in parts of Mount Pleasant’s Old Village in 2003.
